The Jimmy Nardello pepper began in the Italian village of Ruoti, where Giuseppe and Angella Nardello grew it before immigrating to America in 1887 with the seeds of their beloved pepper. The family settled in Naugatuck, Connecticut, and their son Jimmy, the pepper's namesake, inherited their love of gardening. Before his death in 1983, Jimmy donated his seeds to the Seed Savers Exchange so anyone could grow them and today the variety is honored in Slow Food's "Ark of Taste." Despite their fiery red, curling shape, these peppers are sweet rather than hot. They are thin-skinned with a rich, almost caramelized flavor when fried. We rarely get these because they are usually all pre-bought by restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. If you want to give them a try, the time is now!
